Grade School Oatmeal Cookies

Preheat oven to 350°.

1 c shortening
1 c sugar
1 t vanilla
1 t salt
3 c old-fashioned oatmeal
1 c brown sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 c flour
1 t baking soda
1/2 c chopped walnuts or peanuts (optional)

Cream shortening and sugars, add eggs and beat. add remaining ingredients. Blend well and bake 8-10 minutes. Should be slightly gooey when they come out of the oven.
